Job Summary:

The Environment, Health, Safety, & Sustainability Specialist (EHSSS) is a key contributor to ensuring safe, sustainable, and compliant operations across our diverse facilities, including a chemical manufacturing plant, warehouse, and office locations. This role requires a proactive leader who thrives in a dynamic manufacturing environment, is adept at solving complex problems with innovative solutions, and can effectively navigate the unique challenges of supporting multiple operations.

As the EHSSS, you will be responsible for developing and implementing programs that ensure regulatory compliance, promote a culture of safety, and advance Alterra’s sustainability goals. This role demands a balance of technical expertise, strategic thinking, solution execution and exceptional communication skills to influence and drive continuous improvements.

Reporting to the EHS Manager, the role will be full-time, non-exempt and primarily located at our plant in Akron, OH, which is a 24/7 operation. 

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • EHS Compliance & Program Development: Implement and maintain comprehensive EHS&S programs to ensure adherence to OSHA, EPA, and other regulatory requirements across all Alterra locations, including the plant, warehouse, and offices.
  • Risk Management: Conduct risk assessments, job hazard analysis, and inspections to identify potential hazards and develop innovative solutions to address them proactively. Guide and teach operations stakeholders to identify and mitigate hazards in real time.
  • Cross-Site Coordination: Support EHS&S initiatives across all facilities, ensuring alignment in policies and practices while adapting to the unique needs of each site. This will include administrative work such as drafting SOPs, managing physical and virtual records, etc.
  • Incident Management: Lead and support investigations of incidents and near-misses, identify root causes, and drive corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Sustainability Leadership: Collaborate with leadership to develop and execute strategies that reduce environmental impact and integrate sustainable practices into everyday operations.
  • Training & Engagement: Design, deliver, and manage computer based and trainer led training programs that ensure compliance with EHS&S requirements.
  • Data Analysis & Reporting: Monitor and analyze key performance indicators, prepare detailed reports for leadership, and recommend actionable improvements.
  • Continuous Improvement: Foster a culture of safety and sustainability through creative problem-solving and the implementation of best practices.
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams, Forms and Outlook.   
  • Working knowledge of computers, which preferably includes EHS software.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills with a proven ability to develop high-judgment, innovative solutions to dynamic challenges.
  • In-depth knowledge of relevant regulations, standards, and best practices.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build relationships and influence across diverse teams and locations.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced setting.
  • A passion for sustainability and a commitment to creating a safe and environmentally responsible workplace.
  • Ability to work flexible shifts including days, nights and/or weekends.
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in EHS, preferably in manufacturing or multi-site settings; especially from OSHA PSM and/or ISO 45001/14001/9001/Responsible Care environments.
  • Certification in safety, industrial hygiene, or environmental management preferred
  • Experience with site level contractor safety management, regulated waste program management, DOT/Dangerous Goods, and/or OSHA Hazard Communication program management in an EPA listed chemical facility preferred.
Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Walking very frequently indoors and outdoors.
  • Occasionally climbing stairs and potentially platforms.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.
Base Pay Range: 
  • $28-35 / hour
